This large Steering Paddle is hand-carved and painted by Trevor Hunt from the Kwakwaka'wakw Nation. A steering paddle is a very large, broad paddle used at the stern of the boat for steering. It has been carved from red cedar, painted in black, grey, red, and green acrylic, and features 23 inlays of mother-of-pearl, 2 inlays of abalone shell, and 2 onlays of copper.
The Eagle Symbol is known as “The master of skies” and is a symbol of great significance. He is believed to be the creature with the closest relationship with the creator. Soaring to great heights, he can travel between the physical and the spiritual world. He is said to be a messenger to the creator.

The paddle measures approximately 82 inches or 208 centimeters long, 10 inches or 25 1/2 centimeters wide, and 1 inch or 2 1/2 centimeters thick.
